Dismissing a petition the Calcutta High Court held that PhD degree awarded by an open university can not be equal to the one awarded by a regular university. Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Arun Mishra was hearing petition filed Sumana De and few other candidates who had moved court challenging the order of a single bench.
The petitioners had moved moved the court after College Service Commission of the state government failed to recognise the PhD degree in English awarded to them by Netaji Subash Open University under distance course.
The petitioners had applied to the College Service Commission for the post lecturer in state colleges. The petitioners, last year, had moved the Calcutta High Court, where a single judge bench had dismissed their petition.
The petitioners then moved the Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Arun Mishra challenging the order of the single bench.
Appearing for the government, the state counsel said though the petitioners were awarded PhD degree by the open university in 2008, the course was not conducted according to UGC guidelines.
The Division Bench said the PhD degree given by an open university can not be equated to the degree awarded by the regular university. (Express News Service)
